A highly stylized, retro image of a woman in a leopard print top with big blonde hair and bright blue eye-shadow named Debbie, frantically peering through window blinds. A comic-style thought bubble appears above her with the text 'WHERE'S MY FUCKING HANDBAG,' alongside a drawing of a small child holding a teddy bear.

IN CONVERSATION (Pt 4) Alexis Goes Cruising After Party

STUART: Your entire creative development has been flanked by high camp and these singular, uncompromising women. Is there a final archetype who defined the visual standard for Chasing Idols?

DAVID: You’re talking about Grace Jones, aren’t you?! [Laughs] Put it this way. I met Grace on a checkerboard dance floor in Claridge’s, and people were too scared to dance with her. Can you imagine? Leaving Grace Jones on her own? No way. David Barron was the only person brave enough to treat Grace Jones just as she is: a Black Queen who should never have to dance alone.

DAVID V BARRON

STUART: We can’t close this chapter without addressing the ultimate elephant in the room. Looking at the visual framing of this layout, who exactly is that peeking through the blinds?

DAVID: [Laughs] Oh, that’s just Debbie. Everyone has known a Debbie at some point in their life. She is the universal archetype of the uninspired spectator—the person who desperately craves the spotlight but lacks the internal fire to ignite her own. Always someone else’s plus one, because she is completely devoid of her own original inspiration, she is forced to watch, copy, and live entirely vicariously through the creativity of others.

STUART: You really nailed it when you described her as a turkey who thought she could be a peacock.

DAVID: Exactly. When you have no substance of your own, you are condemned to wear the stolen plumage of others just to be seen. It is an incredibly lazy, pretentious, and banal way to exist. But this entire monument is built on absolute ownership and stone truth. The curtain-twitchers can stand outside and stare all they want, but they are never getting through the door.

STUART: So? Victory is his. The horizon ahead belongs entirely to Ben. With the DVB Era Monument officially sealed and complete, what can people expect from this next chapter? Or is the mystery itself part of the design?

DAVID: The mystery is the design. That’s life. I’m almost 50 years old now. The public have forty years of my sound, vision, and frozen truth of David V Barron. Ben begins in private, with an entirely blank canvas, completely unburdened by the past, old gatekeepers, or public expectation. The next era won’t be announced, explained, or put up for debate. It will simply exist on its own terms. Healed. Whole. Pure. It will lead with truth, ownership, compassion, and gratitude. Ben is David’s True North on a compass that is finally aligned, in privacy. I put my surrogate celluloid trauma mother on a bike and sent her to an S&M bar. As for my enemies, they can all eat dust because I outlived what was thrown my way.
